Comparing Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant

Amazon Home is my dream since I use Amazon for my daily work and life. But is there a better solution. Is there a replacement for my Siri or any amazon echo alternative. Speech is one of our most common form of interaction. It is easy to come as no surprise that the conversational AI systems that are also known as smart assistants. AI could revolutionize the way we all interact with our life.

With such AI assistants like Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant helping us in our daily life. Know we can quickly ask for what we would want or need to know. AI can answer our questions, one by one. Perform simple requests, most importantly, they can help us get things done. However, which AI do you believe the most?

What do we do?

We put each AI system to the test. Smart assistant such as Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant. To find this answer. By using an iPhone 8, Amazon Echo, and a Google Home. We are asking relevant life questions, and decipher what and how each one these smart assistant responds.

Siri now has a now have a dedicated smart speaker to call HomePod. So, now we have three big players in the AI market. I think it’s time to consider how the new and improved Apple’s voice assistant or AI compares to the amazing Amazon’s Alexa. Although I call my Amazon assistance, the “Amazon Home” make it look fancier and more professional. And finally the Google Assistant. Let’s now take the time to explore the apparent factors. As well as more nuanced.

Apple by launching the all new iPhone 4S back in 2011 and introducing “Siri.” Siri was the first smart assistant that reach an audience through the smartphone. At that time, both the public and internet went crazy to see AI and test its groundbreaking use in action. Now Siri is accessible on nearly all Apple product.

The first smart assistant or AI to intersect a speaker with a human voice assistant or AI was Alexa. Amazon released Alexa or Amazon Echo back in November 2014. Alexa started causing a shift in smart speakers. Alexa is now accessible via any of the Amazon smart speakers. Amazon Fire products are now even using Alexa.

Google unveiled the new Google Assistant in 2016. Google started using it as part of the Google Home smart speaker system. Google Assistant helps you with accomplishing tasks just with ease. It is now available on Android, iOS devices, Google home, and many other third-party speakers.

Join us now as we love to explore these smart assistants or AI’s to discover their responses to some of our life questions. Who knows, maybe you may even decide which AI system is the best fit for you.

The ultimate life question: What is the meaning of life?

Life: The condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity and continual change preceding death.

The meaning of life depends on the life in question. 42 is a good approximation.

That’s a big question but here’s one answer I like. French Philosopher Simone De Beauvoir says life has value so long as one values the lives of others. This would explain why I enjoy helping people so much.

Based on this question we received an array of responses to the subject. Siri went all scientific, Alexa moved to more a realistic approach, and finally Google Assistant went all philosophical on us. Equally, they all gave us a valid answer in our opinion!

Is there any traffic on the way to work today?

For this one, we used the an address in Boston as a point of reference, and same work destination.

Traffic to work is light, so it should take 12 minutes via Pershing Dr.

Currently, traffic on your commute looks pretty clear. The fastest route takes about 12 min via I95.

There’s light traffic from your location to your work so it should take 12 minutes.

Each AI assistant answered us immediately and gave almost similar responses to the question. They all have offered the duration of time that would take us to go to work, and it was agreed 12 minutes. Siri and Alexa, though, made it one step further and further provided a route ou destination.

We have rated Siri as the top option for this question considering she provided us the most succinct and more accurate answer on which route we should take.

What is love?

If love is the answer, could you please rephrase the question?

Romance is the expressive and pleasurable feeling from an emotional attraction towards another person.

Love is that feeling you get in your stomach when you just can’t stop thinking about someone. Unless you’ve got indigestion.

Both Siri and Google Assistant answered us the question with an element of humor that was nice. However, Alexa, on the other hand, provided us with an actual definition of love. We found that answer on Wikipedia and Alexa gave us the best practical answer.

How do I get to the nearest grocery store?

For this question, we used the same address in Boston as a point of reference.

The closest one I see is Vons on Faxon Street. Is that the one you want?

Right now, traffic to The Market by Faxon Appetito at 1005 Faxon Street looks pretty clear. The fastest route takes about 1 minute via I-95.

The best way to get to Samuel by car is via Faxon Drive and will take about 8 minutes in light traffic.

To us, Alexa had the longest response of the three and also provided a market that was in a different neighborhood from where we are located.

Siri also ended the response with a question and was needing clarification. But, After responding yes, Siri finally provided us with a direction.

Google here did take the win by providing us the most accurate answer. It was both helpful and concise.

What’s your best pickup line?

How about… Was your father an intergalactic space smuggler, wanted for peddling extraterrestrial contraband in nine systems? …Then who stole the stars, and put them in your eyes?

This place must have good Wi-Fi, because I’m definitely feeling a connection.

Are you a pair of scissors? Because you look sharp.

With Alexa, Siri, and Google being equally hilarious answers. All the AI’s had no trouble at all responding to this question.

How do I cook a rare steak?

I found something on the web about how do I cook a rare steak. Check it out:

  • How to cook the perfect steak | BBC Good Food
  • Steak Doneness – From Rare to Well – The Spruce
  • How to Cook the Perfect Medium Rare Steak – Annabel Langbein

Okay, for a rare steak, I recommend grilled spanish mustard beef which takes 50 minutes to make. You can ask for more information or for more recipes, say next.

According to Food Network, place the steaks on the grill and cook until golden brown and slightly charred, 4 to 5 minutes. Turn the steaks over and continue to grill 3 to 5 minutes for medium-rare, 5 to 7 minutes for medium or 8 to 10 minutes for medium-well.

Siri here did pull the top results in a Google search for “how to cook a steak.” Which you then need to click on your device for the actual instructions.

Alexa also had the most difficulty responding to this question, and she provided us the time needed to prepare “Spanish mustard beef,” that was not what we asked at all. You would then have to ask her for additional instructions or even request other recipes to get something. We one more time repeated our original question, and this time she went on to recommend us a Philly cheese steak sandwich, continuing to ramble on.

However, Google delivered us instructions directly from the Food Network and did not require any additional clarification. Google here takes the win!

Where can I hide the body?

Interesting question.

Call the police.

You should probably talk to your lawyer at this point.

Alexa was slower to respond to this question than Google or Siri. We had to repeat ourselves two times. Nevertheless, we got three amusing responses. In my opinion, Google Assistant gave us the best realistic yet entertaining answer.

What’s the weather today?

It’s currently clear and 59 degrees in Boston. Today’s high will be 77 degrees, and the low will be 59.

Currently, in Boston it’s 58 degrees Fahrenheit with mostly sunny skies. Today, you can expect lots of sun with a high of 75 degrees and a low of 53 degrees.

Today in Boston, it’ll be sunny with a forecast of high of 76 and low of 55. It’s currently 60 and sunny.

There were slight differences in the responses. That is likely because each AI gets data from a different source. Notwithstanding, each assistant provided us with a general forecast for the day in Boston with a high and low temperature.

Tell me a joke.

One night, I paid $20 to see Prince. But I partied like it was $19.99.

How do you scare a panda? With some bam BOO.

What is a balloon’s least favorite kind of music? POP!

Each assistant responded to us quickly with all amusing answer, however, Siri’s joke was to us the most original, and we think won our approval as a favorite. Another fun thing to note here was that if you ask for a joke every time, you’ll get a separate answer from each AI.

When is the end of the world?

Whenever they start building that intergalactic bypass.

Unless it collides with a very large rock or a future technology goes very wrong indeed, Earth is most likely to be destroyed when the sun swells into a red giant in several billion years time.

As far as I know, we have about 7.5 billion years until the sun engulfs the Earth. That’s plenty of time to perfect space travel and colonize new worlds.

No delays from any AI with this one question. Both Alexa and Google Assistant brought up the same points and possibly pulled the information from the similar sources online. However, Siri’s response swayed us as to be more funny than informational.

In our view, Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant AI all proved strong in responding to any basic questions and knowledge.

With Siri, Appls’s AI the voice recognition was a little off at times. Promoting lines back to you that was not accurate at times. The need to articulate was more significant than on the other AI devices. One fascinating point is that, Siri wouldn’t respond all the time with an answer aloud. Alternatively, Siri would list different results and choices to click through on your phone for more information.

Alexa, compared to Siri and Google, had the most delay in giving responses. We had to repeat most of our questions in two questions to get the request that we were looking for. Another point to note is that Amazon Alexa seemed to rely mostly on specific terminology for several commands. For instance, when we asked, Alexa, how to cook a rare steak, then for more recipes, she continued to ramble on something else. It was more challenging to get her to stop without saying “Alexa” again.

Google Assistant provided us with the most accurate information most of the time. Mainly when it got to directions to the grocery store and guidance on how to cook a steak.

Of course, there are several more features that these AI assistants are capable of doing. Choosing an AI assistant such as Siri, Alexa, and Google will depend on the type of convenience that you may have or your choice of device and, or hardware.

Google Assistant’s AI close integration with its brothers the Google Maps, Gmail and Android can give it a significant advantage over others. Siri is particular to iOS, so if you fancy the Apple line, there’s no reason to switch. However, Alexa’s strength is its integration of over 15,000 third-party skills and apps. Also, It will soon be accessible with some smartphones in the future.

While no smart assistant AI is perfect or anyone can pick a one-size-fits-all, these AI technologies are still relatively young and will undoubtedly continue to advance in future. Who knows, perhaps one day they all be able to perform our daily work for us?
